What comes in our mind when we hear the word navigation? 

  •  It simply means That finding path from one place to another in the simplest and the safest possible way. 
  • In this blog we will talk about navigation done by the ship . Earlier people use to navigate in the seas and oceans by estimating the angle of the celestial objects with respect to the angle of the ground. which was known as the celestial navigation which was comparatively tougher and confusing than the technologies we have today onboard a ship.
  • Sextant was usually used for celestial navigation.



  • In these modern time the methods of navigation have completely changed although principles of the navigation remains almost the same . new generation of the navigation introduces seafarers to many modernized equipment that can make navigation quicker, simpler and most importantly efficient and reliable .the equipment used are (AIS, ARPA,EPIRB,RADAR) another example of the change in the technology of navigation is the use of ECDICS (Electronic chart display and information system ) which is now used instead of the hard paper chart because of its efficiency. As paper charts need to be updated every now and then the ECDISC gets updated on its own also it has a lot of safety alarm system which prevents the ship from undergoing any accidents.




  • AUTOMIZATION:-Lets go one more step ahead then todays navigation system can you imagine a ship moving on its own without any man power just like a ship have got an ability to think , function and  efficiently perform operations like Anchoring, mooring, Watch keeping, loading discharging etc.

  • ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MERCHANT NAVY:- In today's world we all are well aware about the capability of the Artificial intelligence . Now just imagine if this technology of AI is combined with the technology of the ship . The ship can become one of  the most smart and powerful tool for the global economy .

The future of navigation is looking bright with the developing infrastructure and technology. The introduction of autopilot on board a ship has made navigating the ship little easier in combination with other technologies.
