The way of trotting in the merchant navy is going to revolutionize with innovations in technology. Here are some key trends shaping its future: Here are some key trends shaping its future:

  • Automation and Digitalization: The autonomy level of navigation systems is getting higher and higher as it is more and more combined with digital vehicles. Along with that, the use of electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), automatic identification systems(AIS), digital route plans are also brought in.



  • Integration of AI and Machine Learning: Smarter systems containing AI are able to lead decision making to advance navigations – sensors for weather routing and collision avoidance being examples.
  • Remote Monitoring and Control: Satellite communication techniques, which are built on IoT (Internet of Things), allow monitoring of ship performance as well as fuel efficiency and shipping status emanating from land-based control centers.



  • Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): This novelty is explored by the developers of AR and VR being used to elevate the standard of situational awareness and environmental elements of navigation, providing the navigators with better visualizations and environment during navigation.
  • Cybersecurity: While passengers switch to using electronic devices more frequently, cybersecurity is among the most important ones to provide the highest level of ship protection from cyber attacks and ensure the accurate information in navigation.



  • Environmental Considerations: In the future, navigation will also be affected by environmental policies and a transition to greener practices such as the optimal paths that reduce the consumption of fuel and sources of pollution.
  • Training and Skills: The navigators are constantly having to be trained so as to keep pace with the changing technology besides knowing how to use the Modern Navigation systems.

In the long run, the way navigation functions in modern merchant vessels is now shifting to the direction of more efficient and environment friendly systems with the use of advances in technology
