 FUNDAMENTALS OF NAVIGATION

WRITTEN BY - VED SHIRPHULE (22590)

What is Navigation ?

Navigation which helps humans to get there direction to there destination by various method. Our planet earth is divided by longitude ,latitude and equator . Longitudes lines  are meridians and great circles i.e. each one directs the earth in half. Latitudes lines are passing from both hemisphere from equator to poles . Equator line is at center of earth which at 0 degree and dividing both hemisphere.

The basic fundamentals that helps for navigation to navigate are follows -

Bearing, Veering, Deviation, Variation, Magnetic compass , True compass , Radar Bearing , Pole Star , Compass Direction in degrees and etc.

Equipment of Navigation on ships -

GPS ; set of information - Latitude, longitude, course made good, speed made good, datum, off-track value, range from next waypoint, bearing of next waypoint.(Global positioning fixed system)

RADAR ; set of information - Distance to objects, bearing of objects, relative speed of objects.(Radio and Detection and Ranging System)

ECDIS ; set of information -Electronic charts, ship's position, route planning, safety information, navigational warnings. (Electronic Chart Display and Information System)

Gyrocompass ; set of information - Ship heading , rate of turn .

Magnetic compass ; set of information - Magnetic heading , Deviation , Variations .

NAVTEX ; set of information -Maritime safety information, weather forecasts, navigational warnings.

ARPA ; set of information - prevent collision , give targets such as - range , bearing ,course ,speed ,CPA ,TCPA . (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid)

Aneroid Barometer ; information - Atmospheric Pressure in millibar (mb).

BNWAS ; set of information - Safety of navigator , gives alarm if button is not pressed in fixed time . (Bridge Navigation Alarm System )

VHF ; set of information - communication between ship to ship , ship to shore ; for distress , urgency , safety signals . (Very High Frequency)

EPIRB ; set of information - send distress signals to shore station via satellite.(Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)

This are some Navigational equipment which helps sea fears to navigate there vessel while voyage.

Navigation is a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another. The field of navigation includes four general categories: land navigation, marine navigation, aeronautic navigation, and space navigation.

It is also the term of art used for the specialized knowledge used by navigators to perform navigation tasks. All navigational techniques involve locating the navigator's position compared to known locations or patterns.

Navigation, in a broader sense, can refer to any skill or study that involves the determination of position and direction. In this sense, navigation includes orienteering and pedestrian navigation.
